TRIAZOLAM – ORAL

USES

This medication is used for the short-term treatment of patients with trouble sleeping (insomnia). Triazolam belongs to a class of medications called sedative/hypnotics. It acts on your brain to produce a calming effect.

HOW TO USE

Read the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start using triazolam and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions regarding the information, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Take this medication by mouth, with or without food, usually once nightly, 30 minutes before bedtime; or take as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Grapefruit juice can increase the amount of certain medications in your bloodstream. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

SIDE EFFECTS

Dizziness, loss of coordination, or blurred vision may occur. To minimize falls, remember to get up slowly when rising from a seated or lying position. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. This medication may make you sleepy during the day. Tell your doctor if you have daytime drowsiness. Your dose may need to be adjusted. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Some people who take sleep medications have reported getting out of bed and sleepwalking, driving, eating, talking on the phone, or having sex while not fully awake. Often they do not remember these activities. This problem can be dangerous to you or to others.

Keep a list of all the products you use (including prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicines without your doctor’s approval. Some products that may interact with this drug include: clozapine, disulfiram, sodium oxybate. Other medications can affect the removal of triazolam from your body, which may affect how triazolam works. Examples include boceprevir, mifepristone, telaprevir, St John’s wort, certain antidepressants (such as nefazodone, SSRIs such as fluoxetine/paroxetine), azole antifungals (such as itraconazole, ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin, clarithromycin), HIV protease inhibitors (such as lopinavir, ritonavir), HIV NNRTI’s (such as delavirdine, efavirenz), rifamycins (such as rifampin, rifabutin), among others.

OVERDOSE

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly. Symptoms of overdose may include: slow breathing, slurred speech, or a deep sleep from which you cannot be awakened.

 

MISSED DOSE

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember if it is still near bedtime. If it is already the next day, resume your usual dosing schedule that night at bedtime. Do not double the dose to catch up.

STORAGE

Store US product at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Store the Canadian product at controlled room temperature 59-86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C). Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed.
